 Arts and Media Department, Foundation University Islamabad, Rawalpindi Campus in collaboration with Peace Development Foundation is organizing a two-day International conference on Contemporary Media Debates. This conference is dedicated to all aspects of media, Islam, peace, human rights and related subjects from the point of view of theory and practice.

What is Our Goal?

The 1st International Conference on Contemporary Media Debates aims at forming the lines of communication, increase in the academic and religious mobility and formation of mechanisms for personal interaction with foreign researchers and subject specialists related to the educational, social, political and media circles from academia and industry in diverse panel discussions.

Conference will feature a number of panel discussions led by experts from academia and industry with the objectives to provide a platform for academicians, researchers and practitioners to:

  • Disseminate research, providing insights into the challenges, opportunities, emerging strategies and analytical tools in the domain of Digital Communication and Islamophobia;
  • Present case studies on application of tools and techniques in the field of media and Islamophobia;
  • Explore cutting- edge ideas, results and share experiences
  • Critically evaluate questions concerning the elaboration of effective mechanisms for activation of international cooperation among researchers, innovators, and representatives of social community as well as the provision of interstate digital media.

Prof. Dr.MasoodaBano

Read more Prof. MasoodaBano is Professor of Development Studies at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford. Professor MasoodaBano has built large scale comparative studies on Muslim societies combining ethnographic and survey data. She has authored a number of books on Islam and Muslim societies. She recently completed a five-year major research project “Changing Structures of Islamic Authority and Consequences for Social Change - A Transnational Review". The project studied how both old and new centers at Islamic authority are responding to changed expectations of Muslim youth in Muslim-majority countries as well as those Living in the West. Key publications from the project include: “The Revival of Islamic Rationalism: Logic, Metaphysics and Mysticism in Modern Muslim Societies "(Cambridge University Press 2020) and “Female Islamic Education Movements: The Re-Democratization of Islamic Knowledge.” (Cambridge University Press 2017): and two edited volumes: “Modern Islamic Authority and Social Change: Evolving Debates in Muslim Majority Countries”. Prof. Dr. Shahira S. Fahmy

Read more Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the American University, Cairo Professor Dr. Shahira S. Fahmy received her PhD degree from Missouri School of Journalism. She is also affiliated with the University of Arizona, where she served as a tenured faculty for more than a decade and was the first female Arab-American journalism full Professor at an American Research University. Her research focuses on Peace Journalism and Visual Communication, most recently analyzing “how emerging technologies are transforming the relationship between media and terrorism in society”. She has published over 80 journal articles and book chapters, in addition to four books. Professor Fahmy has won several research awards and has given several keynote speeches. Her recent international engagements include professional visits to universities in England, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Latvia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Ethiopia, China and Pakistan. She was the recipient of the Visual Communication Book Award by the National Communication Association and received two Fulbright awards to work with the NATO Strategic Communication Center of Excellence in the Baltics and UNECA in Africa. She is the associate editor of the flagship Journal of Communication. She has served as the associate editor of Mass Communication & Society for almost a decade and currently sits on edi­torial boards of multiple journals in the Communication discipline, including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication & Society, Media, War & Conflict and Visual Communication Quarterly. In 2020, Professor Fahmy was elected to The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) association-wide leadership position and at this time is a member of the AEJMC Publications Committee.

Prof. Dr. Dr Steven Youngblood

Read more Steven Youngblood is the founding Director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at the Park University in Parkville, Missouri USA, where he is Associate Professor of Communications and Peace Studies. He has organized and taught Peace Journalism Seminars and Workshops in 27 countries/territories. Youngblood is a two-time J. William Fulbright Scholar (Moldova 2001, Azerbaijan 2007). He also served as U.S. State Department Senior Subject Specialist in Ethiopia in 2018. Youngblood is also the author of “Peace Journalism Principles and Practices” and “Professor Komagum.” He edits “The Peace Journalist” magazine, and writes and produces the “Peace Journalism Insights” blog. He has been recognized for his contributions to world peace by the U.S. State Department, Rotary International, and the World Forum for Peace, which has named him a Luxembourg Peace Prize laureate for 2020.

Dr Nico Carpentier

Read more Nico Carpentier is Senior Researcher at the Department of Informatics and Media of Uppsala University. In addition, he is an Extraordinary Professor at Charles University in Prague, and holds a part-time position as Associate Professor at the Communication Studies Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Moreover, he is a Research Fellow at Loughborough University, and president of IAMCR.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Talib

Read more Dr. Muhammad Talib completed his PhD from Jamia Millia Islamia Delhi, India. He is lecturer of Anthropology at the institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford. His research in the anthropology of Islam focuses on Sufi groups and madrassas. His current research work “Madrassas in the recent history: an alternative View between anthropology and international relations " is a critical examination of the state of social science scholarship on Islam in the contemporary world after 9/11.

Prof. Dr. Jake Lynch

Read more Jake Lynch is the Chair of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies (DPACS) at the University of Sydney. His scholarly publications include several books and over 50 book chapters and refereed articles, received the prestigious award of the 2017 Luxembourg Peace Prize, by the Schengen Peace Foundation. He served as Political Correspondent for Sky News, at Westminster, and the Sydney Correspondent for the Independent newspaper, BBC World Television News, the Executive Committee of the Sydney Peace Foundation, and as Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association. He also served British Council, Council of Europe, DANIDA, GTZ, SIDA, NORAD, the Olof Palme Memorial Fund and the Australian Commonwealth government held research fellowships at Cardiff University and Bristol University, in the UK, and at the School of Communication of the University of Johannesburg, in South Africa. He devised training workshops in peace journalism in many countries including Afghanistan, Fiji and Nepal.

Prof. Dr. Shabbir Akhtar

Read more Dr. Shabbir Akhtar is a philosopher trained at Cambridge University. He has published widely on pluralism and race relations in Britain. He has published about Islam’s and Christianity’s differing responses to modern secularism. His books include “The Light in the Enlightenment" (1990),” Be Careful with Muhammad’ (1989), “The Duran and the Secular Mind' (2007) and “Islam as Political Religion “(2010). He has also published three volumes of poetry in English. In 2018, he published the first of a three-volume commentary on the Greek New Testament: “The New Testament in Muslim Eyes: Paul's Letter to the Galatians (Rout/edge)". He is currently a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religions at Oxford University.

Prof. Hatem Bazian

He is co-founder and Professor of Islamic Law and Theology at Zaytuna College,the 151 Muslim Liberal Arts College in the United States. In 2009. he founded a research unit dedicatedto the systematic study of Othering Islam and Muslims at Berkeley, the Center for the Study andDocumentation of Islamophobia. In 2012, he launched the Islamophobia Studies Journal and is knownfor being an organic intellectual. He has published a book with title “Jerusalem in IslamicConsciousness". Currently. He is working on two books, “Silicon Hush: Documenting MuslimCommunities in the Silicon Valley and” VirtualInternment. ‘Muslims and the War on Terrorism". Hismost recent publication is a chapter contribution in French on Islamophobia and an entry to Oxford ‘sHuman Rights Encyclopedia covering the HR under the Palestinian Authority.

Dr. Ma Haiyun

Dr Babak Bahador

Read more BabakBahador is Associate Research Professor in The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, Senior Fellow at University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He is the Founder and Director of Peace News Network,a start-up media organization covering peace building efforts in conflict zones and Director Media and Peacebuilding Project which is an initiative of The George Washington University focused on the overlap of media, ICT, and peace building. He extensive research areas includes media, peace and conflict, political communication and public diplomacy, served as an executive member of the International Communication (ICOMM) section of the International Studies Association (ISA) from 2013 to 2017, as section chair in 2015-16. At GW, Babak is spearheading the Media and Peacebuilding Project which aims to bridge the gap between academic research and peacebuilding practice.

Dr. Sadia Jamil

Vice Chair of Journalism Research and Education Section at the International Association of Media and Communication Research, Dr. Jamil has been serving at the editorial boards of Routledge’s Journalism Practice and Digital Journalism, Intellect’s Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies and is also serving in the International Editorial Board of Bloomsbury-I.B. Tauris book series: “Political Communication and Media Practices in the Middle East and North Africa.” The awards to her credit includes, The University of Queensland’s Centennial Award (2010), UQ’s International Postgraduate Research Support Award (2010), the Norwegian UNESCO Commissions’ and Oslo Metropolitan University’s conference scholarships (2015-2018), IAMCR’s travel grant award (2019), Union Insurance’s Cairo Air Crash Journalists Victim Memorial Gold Medal (2007) and Daily Jang’s and The News’ Sardar Ali Sabri Memorial Gold Medal (2007). Read more Dr. ZafarIqbal, PhD, carries over twenty years of teaching and research experience. He received doctorate in Mass Communication in 2003 with specializing in media and government relations. He serves at International Islamic University, Islamabad and published in the reputed national and international journals. During last ten years, he spent remained a post-doctorate scholar at the University of Surrey, UK, University of Southern California, LA, USA and as Chevening Fellow at University of Oxford, UK. His work aims at exploring the negative sentiments that historically exit between Muslims and non-Muslims, and attempts to figure out the present state of hostility towards Muslims/Islam in the contemporary media dominated world. His basic assumption explains that Islamophobia as a phenomenon is historic in nature and contemporary construction is mainly mediated and its epistemic/symbolic dimension has different connotations. As such, its construction is rendered in a pluralistic manner; hence, it appears as a corpus constituted of Islamophobias. His latest book titled Islamophobia: History, Context and Deconstruction (2020) is published by Sage Int. sheds light on these and many other aspects of Islamophobia.

Prof. Dr. Syed Abdul Siraj

Prof. Dr. BushraHameed ur Rahman

Prof. Dr. Anjum Zia

His academic interests include Peace Journalism, conflict communication, social movements in digital era and media-policy interaction. He has published in prestigious journals like Journalism, journalism practice, gazette, information development and political communication. Currently, he is working on a project on digital information warfare in South Asia.

Mr. Qamar Cheema

Read more Mr. QamarCheema is a faculty member at the Department of International Relations at the National University of Modern Languages Islamabad. He has also taught at Quaid e Azam University, Islamabad, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Islamabad, Szabist, and International Islamic University Islamabad as a visiting faculty member. Mr. Cheema has done his M.Phil. research in “FMCT and Nuclear Nonproliferation in South Asia” and PhD Research on Transnational Character of Political Islam: Repercussion for Pakistan is in process. Mr. Cheema appears on National and International media as a Strategic and Political Analyst. He also writes articles related to Foreign Policy, National Security, and domestic politics in Daily Times and Arab News.
