The Ethical Review committee FUMC formally came into being in 2009. Since then, it has gradually progressed to its present condition. Presently the committee has 7 permanent members and 10 rotatory members. It was founded with the objective of reviewing medical research so as to safeguard the rights, wellbeing and dignity of the subjects participating in the research. The committee works on the principle that the aim of the research no matter how important should never override the wellbeing of the patients and the basic laws of justice. Moreover, the research projects are reviewed to see if they are in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations of our country as well as in accordance with the social and religious values of the society.
The committee meets on the third Tuesday of every month to review proposed research projects and approve them before their commencement. The applicants are required to provide all the necessary information on a prescribed form at least six weeks before the intended commencement of their project. A minimum quorum of 75% of the permanent members need to be essentially present for reviewing and deciding on an application. Any change in conditions that could affect the wellbeing and rights of the subject after the initiation of the study should be reviewed by the committee. The Committee may withdraw approval at any stage if it is not satisfied with the conduct of the research project.
The ERC of FUMC also reviews and monitors the ethical issues pertaining to research projects involving animals. The committee endeavors to ensure that the objective of the study justifies the use of animals and that the animals are treated humanely with minimum induction of pain and discomfort.
In case of an adverse decision, the investigators are entitled to request formally for a reconsideration of the decision and to make written and/or oral presentations to the Committee.
