Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Foundation University Medical College. Students obtain a broad educational background in our department which markedly provides opportunities for postgraduate studies and future employment.
Lectures are delivered by the highly experienced and qualified teachers. Wide areas of Pharmacology are covered in these lectures including general Pharmacology and Systemic Pharmacology (including drugs actions on organs and systems like autonomic nervous system central nervous system cardiovascular system respiratory system gastrointestinal system drugs acting on kidneys drugs affecting blood coagulation and homeostasis hormones anti-microbials anti-cancer drugs immuno-modulants and drugs acting on the eye). A special emphasis is laid on the mechanism of action therapeutic uses drug interaction and adverse effects of commonly used drugs.
They are also actively involved in tutorials seminars and workshops to impart conceptual knowledge for problem based learning.
The department is gifted with an excellent laboratory for undergraduate studies where practicals are conducted on mainly Pharmacodynamic aspects utilizing living experimental animals isolated tissues and organs in-situ.
We also demonstrate how to prepare powders mixtures emulsions creams and ointments in pharmacy practicals. The students are also taught how to choose a p-drug and how to make calculations. They are also given a practice to write prescriptions for some common diseases prevalent in Pakistan. This would help our students to resort to rational drug therapy in their future career as community oriented doctors.
In our future program we intend to established a multi-disciplinary lab to collaborate research activities with other departments of the college. This would facilitate our faculty members to attain post graduate qualifications like M.Phil and Ph.D in the subject of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
